Summary : The principal aim of this publication is: 1) to present a global overview of transgenic crops field tests through year-end 1997; 2) to review the transgenic crops currently approved for commercialization; 3) to document detailed information on the global status and distribution of commercial transgenic crops in 1996 and 1997 by region, country, crop and trait; 4) to provide an initial assessment of the benefits resulting from the use of transgenic crops grown commercially in 1996; and 5) to comment on future developments that will affect the growth and commercialization of transgenic crops in the near-term and in the first decade of the 21st century.
