Conclusion and approval: Members of the review panel unanimously agreed that the Malaysian application for field trial of transgenic papaya resistant to papaya ringspot virus could be approved on the following grounds: 1) the proposal was well-written and prepared with the information required; 2) some information could be added without damaging the content and the merit of the field testing; 3) the research team is capable of handling trial with strong support from MARDI and GMAC; 4) Malaysia has had its own National Biosafety Modification Advisory Committee (GMAC) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (MOSTE). Although, this is the first case of field testing in Malaysia, it is certain that the process will go smoothly.
