Agriculture and food industries are international activities. It is therefore important to establish international harmonisation of guidelines governing the release of genetically engineered organisms to the agricultural and food industries. Unless this harmonisation is achieved in a practical and meaningful manner, it could result in the establishment of non-tariff trade barriers.
