Objectives: Specifically, this training aims to share information and provide participants with: 1) better understanding of the concept, principles and applications of biotechnology; 2) knowledge and wider perspectives on the current issues related to biotechnology, focusing on the science and technical aspects of environmental safety, food safety, socioeconomic and public acceptance, and regulatory processes; and 3) tools for communicating biotechnology issues to different stakeholders. The concluded training was the first of the planned three training-workshops for Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. With the recent approval by the National Committee on Biosafety of the Philippines (NCBP) on the field-testing of Bt corn in ten sites nationwide, the organizers decided that participants should come mainly from three testing sites. A more intensive information campaign in these sites was needed to counter the expected negative campaign that the anti-biotechnology activists and non-government organizations (NGO) will wage to oppose the trials.
