Results of the recently concluded YieldGard (Bt corn) multi-location field trials posted a 40% yield advantage compared to traditional hybrid corn lines, without the use of harmful pesticides. Across the six trial sites, it has been noted that the higher the level of corn borer infestation, the higher the benefits that may be realized from the use of YieldGard. The trials were conducted in six areas: Kibawe, Bukidnon, Tigaon, Camarines Sur, Sta. Maria, Pangasinan; and in Echague, Cauayan and Ilagan, Isabela. The two YieldGard varieties (YG C818 and YG C838) demonstrated effectiveness in controlling the damage of Asian corn borers. The YieldGard varieties had zero percent incidence of ear rot, tassel breakage, corn borer feeding holes in stalks and only posted 0.5% leaf feeding damage.
