Conclusions: Statistical analysis, undertaken on international research on food biotechnology, has identified factors which influence people's acceptance of biotechnology. First and foremost is awareness and knowledge. People need to have some level of knowledge about biotechnology and to recognize a personal or societal benefit. Also important is trust in government and trust in information sources. Trust in the government is high in most Asian countries. One way of reaching consumers is by educating opinion leaders, including scientists and government officials, about food biotechnology. It is also essential to provide the media with factual, science-based information. Food retailers and other parties having direct contact with consumers are important sources of information. The food industry needs to be involved in the education process. Education on biotechnology needs to identify the uses of biotechnology and the benefits that are important and relevant to Asian consumers. Concerns that need to be addressed include consistency with religious beliefs, labeling and general effects on the body. Messages communicated should be clear, simple and consistent. The most effective educational programmes are those in which various parties work together to communicate clear and consistent messages. Education of Asian consumers regarding food biotechnology will be no different.
