Effective biotechnology transfer into SEAsia would require overcoming the major institutional, policy, and public acceptance constraints and challenges. Most of the countries in the region face common needs and problems and can benefit from regional and international collaboration that builds on the capacities and resources of each. Transgenic crops have the potential to significantly increase and/or improve the quantity and quality of food and other agricultural products in SEAsia, and should be considered as an essential element of the region's, and indeed the world's, food security strategy.
