In the Philippines, genetic engineering is now being seen as one of the solutions to alleviate people from poverty, ensure food security and promote sustainable use of natural resources. However, efforts to push forward the development and promotion of its products are being met by resistance from various sectors of society. Farmers' resistance, in particular can be traced to negative experiences with past government programs, the current social, economic, and political condition of farmers, and the manner by which the various agencies are handling the issues being raised against the technology.
