Summary : About 2 years ago, ADB carried out a study on agricultural biotechnology in Asia in collaboration with the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). The study's objectives were to: i) examine the risks and benefits of biotechnology in relation to human health, the environment, and agriculture; ii) identify measures to minimize adverse impacts; iii) explore the use of biotechnology to reduce poverty and achieve food security in Asia; and iv) develop policies and strategies for ADB to support biotechnology in developing countries in Asia. ADB fully recognizes the importance of the agricultural biotechnology in its efforts for poverty reduction in Asia. The ADB's presentation at the conference of CropLife Asia will be based on this study and ADB's activities relevant to the subject in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
