Research and development continues to breathe life to the coconut industry. Sugar with medical benefit, or sugar for diabetics called coco sugar, cloned coconut and makapuno planting materials are just among the "finished products" in the commercial pipeline. From a mere tropical fruit, scientists have developed coconut products - value-adding to what it was known for thousands of years ago - just another fruit with sweet juice and meat, and its byproducts, eventually paving the way for a rebirth of the coconut industry. The PCA National R&D In-house review was held on May 30 at the main building of the Zamboanga Economic Zone in San Ramon, Zamboanga City. The review was participated by around 70 scientists and researchers from the PCA's three research laboratories - the Albay Research Center (ARC) in Guinobatan, Albay, the Davao Research Center (DRC) in Davao and Zamboanga Research Center in San Ramon, Zamboanga (ZRC) and the regional and provincial officers in Mindanao, attended the event to review ongoing projects. The scientists and science researchers presented their projects for evaluation by representative of various funding agencies such as the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) and the Deparatment of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCARRD).
