The time is right to better inform the public about agricultural biotechnology. Interest is high, and individuals are looking for simple, accurate answers to questions that arise about the technology. Targeting information to the stakeholders who routinely interact with the public and providing it to them in a form that is accessible and clear is an important first step toward an efficient, effective program. Taking advantage of the many resources already available will greatly reduce the amount of materials that have to be developed from scratch. Partnering with groups who have an interest in ensuring that the public has a clear understanding of biotechnology can often create a "win-win" situation if the relationships are structured wisely. Giving solid thought up front, however, about what reasonably can be achieved and taking the time to establish regular milestones and timetables for meeting those milestones will help ensure that the initiative stays on course.
