Abstract: The increasing importance of agricultural biotechnology is affecting traditional agricultural institutions in developing countries. In addition to maintaining sound scientific and academic standards, many of these institutions are tasked with building links with the private sector, as this becomes a key issue for agricultural research in these countries. This chapter reviews approaches for industrial research, drawing on experiences from the author and the Singapore-based Institute of Molecular Agrobiology. This institute has developed strategies for industrial research and development (R&D) and commercial development. Emphasis is placed on managing industrial R&D, technology transfer, business development mechanisms and implications for managers in national research organizations.
