Summary : Conclusion: 1) Biotech is a science-based tool to improve food and fiber production. Genetically modified or transgenic crops (TC) precisely express the traits they were developed for; 2) The use of TC as a component of farm practice is an option among smallhold and large-scale farmers in several countries and in the Philippines in the very near future; 3) PCARRD's position - it is therefore, important and necessary for the S&T community as a whole and the scientists, in particular, to establish a science-based biosafety protocol, commercialization guidelines, and the management system including monitoring and evaluation of TC production. These are needed to ensure food safety and healthy farm environment, and to minimize yield loss due to pest and diseases, thereby ensuring farmers' income from the use of technology.
