Consumers are taking unprecedented interest in the way food is produced, processed and marketed, and are increasingly calling for their Governments to accept greater responsibility for food safety and consumer protection. In assuring food safety of foods derived from genetic modification, science relies mainly on the substantial equivalence approach and risk assessment principles established by international agencies. The establishment of Administrative Order No. 8 embodies and reflects many of these scientific principles in its regulation of GM foods that enter the country, addressing all the concerns and issues of biotech derived foods in its goal to ensure food safety to consumers.
