Reinventing Oryza sativa, discovered as an important energy-giving food some 4,000 years ago in Asia and today the staple food of over half of the world's population. Selected scientists from separate countries are making rice a nutrient-dense grain-food to save 10 million children in the Third World who die every year due to malnutrition. As envisioned, by 2015, a cup of rice weighing 160 grams of genetically engineered cooked rice can give the poor - who would often content themselves with small portion of rice in their diet - the combined nutrients from a slice of steak, a piece of prawn, fried egg, some vegetables and fruits. The overall goal is to engineer rice with increased levels of provitamin A, provitamin E, high quality protein, zinc and iron explains the Golden Rice Project website.
