Title: Reproductive and productive performance of Anglo-nubians and crosses in Mindanao.

Author : Mukda Amonruji

Data were collected from SURICO farm in Davao City and Philippine Rural Life Center (PRLC) in Bansalan, Davao del Sur to assess the reproductive and productive performance of Anglo-nubians and their crosses. The overall age at first breeding was 416.2 + 16.4 days with a range of 243 - 808 days, while age at first kidding was 570.6 + 17.3 days with a range of 396 - 961 days. Ages at first breeding and first kidding at SURICO farm were 431.7 days and 603.4 days, respectively. At the PRLC farm, age at first kidding was 559.3 days with an age at first breeding of 411.1, days which could be the age at first fertile mating. The correlation between birth weight and age at first kidding at SURICO farm was -0.55. With once a day milking at SURICO farm, the average milk production was 335.5 kg with a lactation length of 248 days, and milk production per day was 1.3 kg with a range of 0.5 2.4 kg per day. At PRLC farm, the average milk production was 424.8 kg with lactation length of 230.8 days, and milk production per day was 1.9 kg with a range of 0.8 - 4.5 kg per day. Considering only Anglo-nubians with three lactations, the milk production per day at PRLC was greater (P<.05) than at SURICO (1.9 kg vs. 1.4 kg). The mean kidding interval at SURICO farm was 338.4 + 12.7 days with a range of 194 - 708 days. At PRLC farm, the kidding interval was 377.0 + 15.2 days with a range of 208 - 640 days. Most of the kidding intervals at both farms had a range of 181 days - 450 days (79.8 percent). The correlation between lactation length and milk production was from .64 to .80 (P<.01). Only lactation length prolonged (P<.025) and (P<.005) the kidding interval at first and second parities at SURICO farm. At PRLC farm, there was a smaller trend of the effect of lactation length on kidding interval at first and second parities. Frequency of birth per month at SURICO farm were randomly distributed throughout the year (the highest frequency of birth at being in December, 27.5 percent). There was no indication of seasonal kidding because of a uniform feed availability throughout the year. Sex ratios in both farms were not significantly different. It was concluded the first kidding was considerably delayed and kidding intervals were unusually long and variable. Moreover, half native x Anglo-nubian goats have essentially the smae milk production as purebred Anglo-nubian.
