Water-soluble crude extract of kakawate (Gliricidia sepium) leaves yielded 9.05% of the total fresh weight. With petroleum ether as solvent, the percentage recovery was 5.35% while that with ethyl acetate had only 0.93%. Thus, among the three solvents used, distilled water gave the highest yield. In the general bioassay of water-soluble extract on termites no death was observed after 12 hours but 75-80% mortality was evident after 24 hours. The petroleum ether and ethyl acetate crude extracts resulted in 100% mortality of test termites four hours after feeding. This means that petroleum ether and ethyl acetate crude extracts are more effective as antitermitic substance than the water-soluble crude extracts.
