The major purpose of this study was to determine the role of the various types of secondary school programs in the fostering of modernity among students. Specifically, this study was an attempt to test the following hypotheses : (1) the modernity of students is directly related to the number of years spent in secondary schooling; (2) the type of secondary school contributes substantially to the explanation of the variance in the distribution of modernity scores of students in all levels of secondary schooling; (3) the indicators of the quality of the secondary school curriculum contribute substantially to the differential impact of schools on students modernity; and (4) student modernity is associated with family socioeconomic status, perceptions of home and school modernity, and grade-point averages.
