Field experiments were conducted to determine the response of tobacco to varying levels of shading and nitrogen fertilization. Using Simmaba variety as test plant, levels of shading imposed were 2/3, 1/3 and open condition. The fertilization treatments were 75, 40 and 5 kg N/ha, representing high, medium and low nitrogen application rates, respectively. Cured leaf yields were generally higher among plants grown in the open and receiving high N application. However, the quality of cured leaves under full sunlight was lower than those grown at high levels of shading. Nitrogen application had enhancing effect on cured leaf quality.
