The study was divided into two parts with the aims of (1) gaining basic information on the morphology and anatomy of the plant and (2) assessing the potential of the crops when grown under saline condition as affected by the fertility levels of the soil. Detailed anatomical descriptions of the culm, scale, rhizome, tuber, root and inflorescence were made. Line drawings accompanied the parts described. The chlorenchyma tissues were well developed in the upper part of the culm but not in the lower part. Two kinds of cells found in the culm were dscribed and termed "arch cells" and columnar cells" as existing literatures never described them. The culms and rhizomes possessed numerous and well developed air cavities. Well developed aerenchyma occurred in the root cortex.
