Summary : The pattern of growth of Scirpus maritimus was studied with emphasis on the behavior of the tuber. It required 3 to 5 days for a tuber to sprout a shoot. The stolons with a young small tuber bearing a very young shoot were formed at the point of attachment of the shoot to the tuber at 3 weeks after germination. The tuber bearing the new young shoot then gave rise to another tuber at 4 weeks after germination. All the shoots derived from such mother tuber in the first generation died at 27 weeks after germination, giving way to a second generation which occurred right afterwards. Not one of the shoots formed during the first generation produced flowers. Very few flowering shoots were, however, observed in the second crop of shoots. Tuber formation was the only mode of propagation observed. Two kinds of tubers were noted, non-dormant and dormant.
