Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum Linn.) is a unique plant. It has permeated the country's economic and political systems as to warrant executive and legislative interventions. In Indonesia, the tobacco plant is known into two types 1) Voor-Ogst (VO), a material to make cigarette with or without clove flavoring, 2) Na-Oogst (NO), which consists of three types: Deli-NO, Verstenlanden and Besuki-NO (BES-NO), materials to make cigars, cigarillos, sucked cigars and chew cigars. BES-NO is unique in that it is planted in the dry season and harvested in the rainy season. It is planted only in Jember and surrounding areas. Since 1856 it has been one of the primary agricultural products (export commodity) of Jember.
