Summary : Number of divorced women in Umbulharjo district shows higher than another district of Yogyakarta. Some factors have burdening the survival of life, such as the primary breadwinner, the burden of having a new status as widow who have responsibility to her own and her children. Aims of this research are (1) to study demographic, socio-economic condition on divorced women. (2) to study the strategy of life to surmount a life obstacle in the changing area from farm to non-farm. This survey was undertaken in Umbulharjo district. The research is all (113) women in Umbulharjo. The methods used in the research is primarily quantitative, using frequency table and cross table techniques, support by a qualitative one. The finding of the research show that the average age of respondents was 44,6 year, majorities of these women (92,9 percent) were in the labor force with low education and their children life with them. Majorities the older age of these women want no more to marry. The study also reveals that majority of these women life in low (37,2 percent) and middle (39,8 percent) socio-economic condition. Their income was lower than Life quality Index. Majorities of women working in non-farm activities as trader (48,6%). Amount of 26,5% women still have additional work as farmer in the small farm area. To solve the problems, they choose certain strategies. Women with the highest socio-economic conditions choose dynamic accumulation strategy than the middle socio-economic conditions who choose the consolidation, and the lowest one choose the survival strategy. The findings also udnerline the importance of kinship support to meet their basic needs more than the others like community and institutions.
