This research determined the leadership concepts/perspectives and practices of 107 academic deans in 29 higher education institutions (HEI's) at the National Capital Region (NCR) and other regions in the country, and eight selected university presidents. Specifically, the study aimed to describe the dean's profiles and preparations for leadership positions, identify their specific concepts on leadership and perception of leaders' characteristics, rating of academic leadership culture, style, approach, principles and attributes, and identify their leadership experiences and concerns. These data were gathered through survey questionnaire and interviews. Descriptive statistical analysis was used and correlation analysis determined the association between leadership concept, preparation, and profile vis-a-vis leadership perspectives and practices. The academic deans had an average of four years in their present institution and 12 years outside the institution, and 22 years of teaching experience with 19 years of teaching in their present institution. The average age of academic leaders is 52 years old. Majority were appointed to the leadership position. They prepared for leadership through education and related experiences. Majority pursued higher studies. They accepted leadership responsibilities for self-gratification or fulfillment. Their major concern was the welfare of the academic community and they placed high premium on good moral character, moral uprightness or trustworthiness and personal integrity as important strength, trait and attribute of a leader. Indicator of leadership success was through work relationships. Filipino leaders are distinct as role models and manage through a people-oriented and values-driven style. They subscribed that leadership is a dynamic process, they preferred a strategic approach and an enterprise culture, and practiced a participative leadership style.
