Summary : In the Philippines, the rice black bug (RBB), Scotinophara spp. is among the invasive crop pests that are most difficult to manage. After its first reported incidence in Southern Palawan in 1979, RBB outbreaks occurred in various rice-growing provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao resulting in 15 to 23% yield loss. Its occurrence in late 2005 in Iloilo, and especially in Sorsogon, had raised alarm of this pest infesting greater parts of Luzon, where rice is extensively grown, as well as corn, okra and taro, which are alternate hosts of RBB. Awareness and knowledge about the pest are helpful in preventing its spread using effective tools and management. Information access is also important, and oftentimes a critical element in effectively managing invasive species like RBB. This DVD-ROM is a compilation of worldwide published information on the taxonomy, ecology, and management of RBB.
