Recognizing the country's potential in carving a niche in the global bioenterprises, the government has identified biotechnology as one of five priority areas where research and development (R&D) will be pursued. Despite the very limited financial resources allotted by the government for R&D, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the lead government agency tasked to implement the country's policy framework for R&D, has decided to focus on biotechnology and its applications in agriculture, forestry and natural resources, health and medical sciences, environment, energy and manufacturing, and process engineering.
