The experiments were conducted to : (a) determine the rooting response of runner and lateral fruiting stem cuttings to synthetic growth regulators application; (b) to study possible differences in endogenous rooting cofactors between two types of planting materials; and (c) to examine the anatomical structure of stem cuttings in relation to adventitious root formation. Lateral fruiting stems failed to root even when treated with four synthetic growth regulators namely : IBA, NAA, Alar and Quercetin. In contrast, runner cuttings rooted, successfully with or without the application of the four substances. No differences in the levels of promotors and inhibitors were detected in the two types of planting materials. Cofactor 4 is the major root-promoting substance in both kinds of stem cuttings. Root primordia originated from the vascular rays in the interfascicular region between the vascular bundles in both types of cuttings.
