Greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of water regimes, added phosphorus and organic matter (rice straw), acid and lime application on the chemical changes and growth of rice on Lipa clay loam and Luisiana clay. Differences in water regimes had no effect on grain yield production of rice on Lipa soil although rice plants grew luxuriantly in nonsubmerged condition. Submergence markedly retarded both vegetative growth and yields of grain and sttraw on Luisiana soil due to high Fe content and low K, Mg and Mn.
