In the field, Chromolaena odorata characteristically grew closely and densely together, forming an impenetrable thicket to the exclusion of most their species. Seedlings, herbs and grasses abound in the adjacent fields were not found under the canopy ot its stand. No difference between soil nitrogen and phosphorous levels inside the outside of the Chromoleana stand were detected. Light intensity under the canopy was however only 2.7 percent that above the canopy.
