Summary : Taking off from a political ecology perspective, this study endeavored to analyze the historicity of a social movement for the environment in an upland community in Laguna, Philippines through a case study approach. Social movement for the environment means the collective action of a group towards environmental resource protection and preservation. The study revealed that the social movement started as a struggle to control local resource and transformed into a conservation movement. this transformation was influenced heavily by an increasing environmental stress whereby continuous extractive activities in the community's watershed resulted in the continuing depletion of the water supply. The research argued that the interplay of the socio-cultural, political and ecological forces provide the conditions for the emergence and persistence of the movement. A model was developed which emphasizes the phenomenon of conflict within a collectivity or between groups as driving force for a movement to persist or perhaps take a particular trajectory. Recommendations for further research areas that may have theoretical contributions and for policy considerations were discussed.
