Serdang, Malaysia :

The Asia, the Pacific, and Oceania (APO) Newsletter is produced thrice a year and is mainly aimed at promoting the overall concern on plant genetic resources, with emphasis on their conservation and use. It provides information on plant genetic resources activities carried out by national programmes and other centres in the region. Information is also periodically abstracted from recent literature (books, periodicals, etc.), and brief research contributions published. The need to conserve plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) is as great as ever. Currently many collections of crop genetic diversity are insecure, especially in developing countries. The Global Crop Diversity Trust is a unique funding mechanism for the conservation of plant genetic resources that is filling – and will continue to fill into perpetuity - a funding gap which is damaging the viability of research and conservation work around the world. If successful, the Trust will bring direct benefits to holders of collections around the world, especially in developing countries, and huge indirect benefits to farmers, plant breeders, and ultimately all consumers; rich and poor, South and North.
